Windows NT: can it be tuned?

The Microsoft windows NT operating system, by design, includes vluminous performance measurement data, but very few tuning knobs. Initially, official Microsoft spokespersons made extraordinary clams that the OS was able to adapt dynamically to different conditons, eliminating the need for traditional perforance and tuning. This article evaluates th extent to wibich these claims can be substantiated by looking at the design and performance of the NT Cacbe Manager and the "dynamic tuning" that occurs at initialization that is based on memory capacity and the differencese between the Server and Workstation verisons of the OS The fact that there are almst no tuning knobs in the oparating systms also bas implcations for the design of bigh OS. The pfact that there are almst no tuning knobs in the operating systems also has implications for the design of bigh performance applications and the adminstration of complex NT-based systems.
