The performance of file and communication servers is essential to most client./server (C/S) applications. This paper presents an analytic model used to size a Unix-based C/S system. Client PCs download and upload files form a centralized Unix based file./communications servr. The model-a combined Markov chain and queuing network model-allows for the determinaton of the maximum number of concurrent sessions, evice utilizations, and response times. The validated model was unsed to determine the best system upgrade alternatives.
