Managing the enterprise with the application response measurement API (ARM)

One of the most difficult parts of an enterprise performance or capacity analyst's hob is to characterize computer system and network resource consumption by a particular application or w orkload. The continuing movement towards distributed systems, especially the client/server model, has complicated this acitivty even more. Add to this the lack of consistent (and in some cases, totally inadequate) resource measurement metrics on the platforms being used to implement distributed data processing, and the problem begins to appear overwhelming.
