This paper presents a system that combines infrared and visual image processing techniques for the detection of fires in open areas. The paper emphasizes forest fire detectionfrom field observatories appropriately located. The proposed ssytem improves the reliability of infrared detection by eliminating a large number of false alarms. The paper includes experiments carried out in forest fire detection and in urban areas.
