In this paper, an algorithm for the identification of unknown spatially varying parameters is investigated for a class of mechanically flexible cantilevered beams. The system model is described by an Euler-Bernoulli type partial differential equation. In this study, the internal damping coefficient and flexural stiffness are considered as unknwon spatially varying parameters. An inverse problem is formulated as a least-squares fit tot he observation data. Galerkin-based finite element approximations are used to finite dimensionalize the problem. A numerical study is carried out to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
