The use of software for the simulation of systems with continuous dynamics is widespread among engineers in universities and industry. "A pre-requisite for using this software is that the systems dynamics be described in mathematica form (for example, differential equations or state-space models). In the case of manufacturing systems, the use of such mathematical model is often not appropriate and so the question of how to simulate these systems must be asked. This tutorial provides an introductory look at some of the issues involved in looking at approaches to simulation of discrete-event manufacturing systems. No previous knowledge of the topic will be assumed.
