Scintillation gamma-ray detectors are widely applied in the nuclear geophysics research. To decide upon the scintillation material and design of a detector for a specific application one has to look for a compromise between the deisred and achievable parameters and take into account such requirements as the measurement geometry and detector dimensions, gamma-ray or X-ray energy range of measurement, measurement regime (total counting, spectrometry), operating temperature range, admissible shock and vibration limits, cost, etc.
