In order to allow a systematic comparison of atmospheric or presurized fluidized bed combustion power plants of different design a more general simulation program is developed. The program enables the examination of the steady-state and the dynamic behaviour of complete fluidized bed power plants as well as the detailed examination of single process units, e.g. the combustion system, or phenomena, e.g. the fluid mechanics. A system based approach has been chosen to build up the process model. According to this approach the process model is divided into a configuration model, realizing the system representation, and a mathematical model, describing the behaviour of the elementary systems fixed by the configuration model. Within the paper the approach itself is outlined. The tasks of the configuration model as well as the physical/chemical fundamentals of the mathematical model are presented. The performance of the simulation program is demonstrated showing simulation results for the three different fluidized bed power plants. The operating behaviour of the considered power plants including the matching of the partial systems is discussed.
