It is often more economical to keep existing generation capacity in operation than to build new capacity. Repowering is considered at a number of sites because of the need for added capacity, the poor condition of plant equipment (particularly the boiler), the need for improved environmental performance, the need for shorter licensing period, and other reasons. This paper describes the results of a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) conceptual design evaluation of an early commercial repowering application of advanced circulating pressurized fluidized bed combustion combined cycle technology (APFBC). The paper provides a review of the DOE study and summarizes the preliminary results.
