A model for office buildings in the 21st century is being constructed at the builidng Research Establishment in the UK. A European Commission THERMIE grant is enabling a term led bythe Research in Building Group to refine the building deisgn and monitor its use. This paper briefly describes the new building and goes on to detail a study at RIB which has led to modifications to the solar control system. The aim of htis louvre based approach was to provide competent solar shading whilst additioally mitigating glare and encouraging daylingt peretration. A translucent glazing seems to offer the best chance of success. This daylighting system is only one of a series of integrated concepts in a building that has emerged from the context of a growign tradition of UK low energy office design.
