Many groups have tried to integrated general industrial controls into an accelerator, with varying degrees of success. Frequently the speed, resolution or siolation offered is not adequate for the rugged accelerator environment. This paper describes the development of a modular control system designed specifically for use on accelerators and associated systems. The hardware and embedded software design technqies used to ensure reliable operation in estreme conditions are detailed. Actual experience of integrating this system onto commercial ion implanters is described, together with its use on some of the more powerful research accelerators around the world.
