The performance of the condenser cooling cycle of a steam cycle power plant is modeled using the modular system simulation program TRNSYS (Ref 1). Computer models of the cooling tower and cooling pond performance are developed from the energy transfer and flow models. The cooling pond model incorporates meteorological conditions and the energy input to the pond. The cooling system is linked to the steam cycle performance using a simple condenser model that predicts the condenser back pressure for a given circulating water temperature and plant load. The system model is then used to evaluate a number of operating options.
