U.S.Marine Corps High Mobility Multi-Wheeled Vehicles(HMMWVs) are equipped with heat-treated aluminum body panels that cannot be weldedand must be reparied by riveting sheet metal patches onto them, a process requiring power tools available only at a maintenance facility. This program demosnstrated the feasibility of developing a field-applied, corrosion-resistant, permanent repair patch for ground combat support vehicles. A unique, low temperature cure(LTC), hydrophobic composite matrix resin material and a water-based, sol-gel surface treatment were used to attain the corrosion-resistance and mechanical properties required for the Vehicle Repair Patch(VRP).
