MgAl_2O_4 spinel as material for ultrafiltration membranes

Spinel MgAl_2O_4 ultrafiltration membrane was elaborated using the sol-gel process. Sol and powder were characterized. The spinel crystallization occurs at 288 deg C. The characterization of membranes was performed by scanning electron microscopy and filtration tests. The surface charge of the membrane determined by electrophoretic measurements in NaCl solution was shown to be positive in a large pH range. Ultrafiltration of the NaCl solutions was performed. The rejection of ionic species can be explained by taking the surface charge of the spinel membranes into account.
