Two different powder processing methods, namely hydrolysis of alkoxides and gel cating TiO_2 particles, were used to prepare aluminiumu titanate-25vol percent mullite composite powders. The reuslts showed that a synchronous formation of Al_2TiO_5 and mullite occurred at approx 1350 deg C in the precursor repared by hydrolysis due to the retarded formation of rutile and alpha-Al_2O_3 phases. An uniform microstructure was obtained by sintering the alkoxide derived powders.
