As America entered the final decade of the 20th century, millions of peple turned out to celebrate Earth Day's 20th anniversary. Environmental awareness was on an upswing, and as a result, environmental eduction became a priority across the country. Environmental education was making significant headway into the public school system, and recycling emerged as the vanguard of this movement. At first the excusive province of school children, recycling soon became a household habit. As children collected cans for cash, they also taught their parents to recycle. In it movement from classroom to curbside, recycling "rode the school bus" to Main Street and, within a few short years, became institutionalized.
