Conventional cross-fluw ultrafiltration (UF) systems have been to treat soluble oil wastes from metal-working operations. However, the treatment of highly concentrated wastes using conventional UF systems has been limited by their inability to provide the high recirculating velocities required to maintain an acceptable permeate flux by scouring the membrane surface. Conventional UF systems are unable to maintain a high velocity as the oil concentration in the bulk feed solution increases due to the increase in feed viscosity.
