Technical, economic, and risk factors were evaluated in selecting bulk excavation as the preferred remedial design alternative to in-situ vitrification (ISV) and in-situ containment cells (ICC) for two separate areas at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), the Chemical/Animal Pits and Glass Holes, that historically received chemical and low-level radioactive wastes generated from on-site research activities (1).
