Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the most prevalent environmental pollutants contaminating a large number of industrial and Superfund sites. PAHs are released into the environment by power generating stations, refuse burning, coke ovens, petroleum oil refineries and terminals, synthetic fiber industries, wood treatment facilities, etc. The PAHs are problematic largely due to their minimal water solubility,a nd strong adherence to soil. THese compounds are characterized as possible carcinogens and teratogens. Thus USEPA listed these compounds as priority pollutants. The use of different desorption enhancers, like surfactants, extractants etc., can increase the rate of release of these compounds, and is expected to enhance the biodegradation rates.
