In the United States, disinfection of water is accomplished mainly by chlorination. Chlorination is economical and has been shown to be effective in inactivating bacteria and most viruses (1). Over the past 20 years or so, evidence has been accunulating regarding the production of carcinogenic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during chlorination. These DBPs include trihalomethanes (THMs) and a myriad of other halogenated compounds (2,3).
