The anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR), developed by Dague and coworkers at Iowa State University, is a high-rate anaerobic treatment technology capable of maintaining long solids retention times (SRTs) at relatively short hydraulic retention times (HRTs). The ASBR has the potential of being applied to the treatment of many different waste streams, one of which is wastes generated in swine production facilities. Previous work by Zhang et al. reported a 58 percent volatile solids (VS) destruction with an ASBR treating swine waste operating at 25 deg C with an HRT of 3 days and a loading of 4.5 gVS/Lcentre dotd (1). VS destruction of 78.9percent with an ASBR treating swine waste operating at 25 deg C, 6 day HRT, and 3.13 gVS/Lcentre dotd loading was reported by Dague and Pidaparti (2). Still other work by Schmit and Dague with an ASBR treating swine waste at 25 deg C, 6 day HRT, and 4.19 gVS/Lcentre dotd loading reported a VS destruction of 48.2percent (3).
