EELGRASS MAPPING IN PUGET SOUND, WASHINGTON USING HYPERSPECTRAL IMAGING AND UNDERWATER VIDEO

Until the recent advent of high-resolution remote sensing, it has been difficult to delineate and map eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) habitat such that habitat structure can be assessed at multiple spatial scales. This project provided a comprehensive intertidal-subtidal characterization of the eelgrass habitat in the vicinity of the Hood Canal Floating Bridge, in Washington state using a combination of digital imagery from an airborne hyperspectral sensor and underwater videography. Subtidal underwater video data was collected ~500 m north and south of the bridge, with ~14,000 observations recorded. We also used the Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) to collect 19-band imagery along two flightlines of Hood Canal intertidal and shallow subtidal shoreline ~1 km north and south of the eastern terminus of the Bridge. This mosaic of intertidalsubtidal habitat is, to our knowledge, one of the first integrated mapping efforts using underwater video and hyperspectral imaging.
