The Use of Landsat TM Multi-Temporal Datyasets for Assessing the Impact of Golt COurse Construction in the Grand Strand Region of South Carolina

During the 1980's, aboom in the recreational golf industry occurred in the vi inity of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a vernacular region known as the "Grand Strand". The Grnd Strand has historically been a resort area for most of this century, with the primary attraction being the long arcuate beach along the Atlantic Coast. Golf was introduced to the area in 1927 and the region had apprximately a dozen golf courses by 1960. Tourist industry marketing programs initiated in the ensuingdecades docused on the golf theme as an activity that would attract tourists to the region year-round, whenthe weather in these latitudes is unsuitable for beachgoing. Municipal and provate business interests developed a golfing environment that is known world-wode as both an economical form of recreational vacation "package" and attrative to the golfer becasue of the diversity of the golf courses avaliable for play.
