Ozone is ordinarily measured by the air quality monitoring network: despite of the classification of type of measuring site, often the local peculiarity of the sites afects the quality of ozone measurement. With the aim to characterize the ozone monitoring site, physical-chemical indexes concerning the NO_2/NO_x ratio, the creation or depletion of ozone and the behaviour of the conservative parameter O_x, defined as the sum of O_3 and NO_2, have been calculated; these indexes have been applied to a number of ozone summer data series, belonging to the monitoring networks of the Provinces of Milan, Bergamo, Como and Varese, located in the Northern Italy, and Canton of Ticino, located in the Southern of Switzerland. During the works we rtested if the indexes are applicable and significant. The result of the work is a classification of about 30 ozone monitoring sites in "rural" or "urban" type, based on calculated indexes values, and a characterization of different behaviour of nitrogen dioxides in different monitoring sites.
