Flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs), like nay other advanced systems, are highly automated, captial intensive and complex systems. Their components consist of state of the art automated machining stations, materials handling a nd storage equipment, and sophisticated launching, scheduling and control systems. Each component of an FMS is important for the successful operation of the entire system. parts launching, and scheduling are as critical as the management of physical resources. Pallet or fixuture management is a critical component of the overall scheduling system. An approach for modeling contention rules which are used for the allocation of pallets/fixtures in flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) is described.
