This paper examines the problems assocated with three techniques currently being developed for integrating the operation of the automatic vehicle indetification (AVI) system and the enforcement camera system (FCS) on a multi-lane road. In the first method, optical line-sensors are employed to detect the width and the position of a vehicle passing a zebra pattern on the road. In the second method, a downward looking camera is used to detect the presence of the vehicles inside the detection zone of the AVI system, as well as positioning, counting and classifying the vehicles. In the third method, the enforcement cameras are directly used for detecting the presence of the vehicles, and to recognise the vehicle number plates on-line. The registration numbers recognised by the ECS are directly compared to the information from the AVI system, thus the detection of the vehicle position is no longer required.
