Endothelial cells (ECs) detect blood flow and show several physiological responses from nitric oxide synthesis to gene experssion (Davies et al, 1993). It has been also known that fluid shear stress induces cytosolic free Ca~(2-) concentration ((Ca~(2=)_i) increase (Ando et al, 1991) and Ca~(2+) oscillation (Greiger et al, 1992) in ECs. Spatiotemporal pattern of (Ca~(2+)_i increase in groups of ECs has not been analyzed in detailed yet, we therefore visualized the response of (Ca~(2+)_i when ECs in confluent monolayers were exposed to laminar flow.
