Fuel Composition Effects on Emissions from a Spark-Ignited Engine Operated on Simualted Biogases

Disposal requirements for biogases produced in landfills and sewage digesters have generated interest in their use as engine fuels. Performance and emissions measurements are reported for a spark-ignited engine operated on baseline natural gas and on three simulated biogas fuels. Mixtures of pipeline natural gas and CO_2 and N_2 were mixed with the intake air and naturally aspirated into the engine. The engine was operated on air/fuel mixtures ranging from near the lean misfire limit to stoichiometric at two speeds (2350 and 2800 rpm), two throttle positions (50 and 100 percent WOT), and at three ignition timings (maximum brake torque timing and at 5 and 10 degrees retarded from MBT).
