Forwarding pointers are employed in mobile communication to reduce network signaling and database load. Here theoretical model is suggested to analyze the performance of the strategy, and it fits simulation results well. When Call-to-mobility ratio(CMR) is high, network costs of using forwarding strategy is larger than that of using the basic strategy as in GSM. SO a method adapting the maximum length of the chain of forwarding pointers is suggested. Simulation results illustrate that the method always chooses the optimal maximum length of the chain for forwarding pointers. When CMR is high it decides automatically not to use forwarding strategy, thus problem of fixed length is solved. Furthermore, the average call setup time is reduced greatly.
