PROMOTION OF THE PROGRAM OF ADVANCED SAFETY VEHICLES FOR 21ST CENTURY

In 1991, the Ministry of Transport of Japan launched the Advanced Safety Vehicles project. The purpose of this project is to make automobiles more intelligent using electronics technology, and to realize ASVs with a greater safety and easier use by the early 21st century, through cooperation between public and private sectors. Through this five year project, participating 9 automobile manufacturers have selected systems from 20 systems of four categories and developed their own system and implemented as a prototype vehicle(s). The four categories are preventive safety technology, accident avoidance technology, damage decreasing technology, and post-impact injury mitigation and prevention system. In 1996, the Ministry has started the 2nd phase of ASV project.
