Systems that include a combination of discrete and continuous features are called hybrid systems. Modeling such systems is useful in process control. In this paper, three methods to model hybrid systems are presented throughout an example defined in order to illustrate process control features. The three approaches to be compared are Antsaklis, Sifakis and Tittus ones, and have been chosen because they are control oriented. The main result of this discussion is to show that any of the three considered methods is suited for modelling the class of system of interest and that a method that clearly separates the plant model and the controller model capable to model process with mixed continuous/discrete parts would be needed.
