Scheduling and planning applications invariably involve uncertainties in demands, equipment and resource availabilities, processing parameters, and product quality properties. In this presentation, the approaches advanced in the literature to treat such uncertainties using mathematical programming and Mote Carlo simulation techniques are reviewed. Four industrially motivated applications are discussed and novel solution approaches are outlined. The paper concludes with an agenda for future research.
