MCM-41, one of the members of M41S family, possesses a hexagonal array of uniform mesopores. Three NiMo catalysts prepared with MCM-41 materials having pore diameters of 30, 40 and 80 angstroms were evaluated for residuum upgrading. It is found that pores of the MCM-41 materials are accessible to bulky molecules and the MCM-41 catalysts are active for demetalation and asphaltene removal. The metal deposition capacity and tolerance improve with MCM-41 's pore diameter. An aged MCM-41 (80A) catalyst has accumulated a nickel and vanadium loading of 0.92 g/g-fresh catalyst. This aged catalyst exhibited an increase in mass of 187% or equivalent to a 2.87 g/g weight ratio of the aged catalyst to the fresh catalyst.
