The Chinese Petroleum Corporation and Mobil Technology Company have jointly developed an improved process for converting toluene and heavy aromatics to produce mixed xylenes. The process is slated for commercialization in June 1997. The new TransPlus Process utilizes a proprietary new catalyst and has the advantages of low capital and operating cost due to improvements in operating conditions. The process also has a high feedstock flexibility. It can effectively handle high conversion of feedstocks containing high levels of C_9+ aromatics. Up to 25 wt. % C_(10) aromatics can be present in the C_9+ feedstock.
