A number of Australian coking coals were blended and the extent to which they fused during carbonisation was examined using Proton Magnetic Resonance Thermal Analysis (PMRTA). In many cases the extent of fusion of blends was different from that expected if this quantity was a linear function of blend composition, implying that the coals interacted during their carbonisation. These differences generally increased with increasing differences in rank between the coals comprising the blend. The interactions arc attributed to transfer of volatile material between the blend components.
