A 34 mm i.d. bench-scale fluidised bed reactor has been built to operate at temperatures up to 1000 °C and pressures up to 30 bar for the rapid generation of fuel reactivity data under realistic experimental conditions. The design of the reactor allows determination of tar/oil and char yields as well as gas analysis. The present report focuses on equipment design and presents preliminary data from pyrolysis and gasification experiments with Daw Mill (UK) coal. Total volatile yields measured in the reactor match closely those from a high-pressure wire-mesh reactor, where evolving volatiles are quickly quenched.
