This work deals with a new process for catalytic liquefaction of coal. It was found that temperature-programmed liquefaction of Wyodak subbituminous coal, which involves the reaction at 350°C using ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (ATTM) as catalyst precursor with added water, followed by water removal and subsequent reaction at 400°C, gave good coal conversion and oil yield. To understand the effect of water in the catalytic tests, model reactions of dinaphthyl ether were also carried out using ATTM in the absence and presence of water.
