摘要

XML is a new technology/language that is designed to allow organizations to communicate more easily with their business partners regardless of the particular platforms involved in the information exchange. According to the growing number of vendors, it is revolutionizing the way B2B, B2C, EAI, and Web portals are designed and built. Forrester Research even found that out of 51 major companies surveyed, 71% said that XML would have a major impact on their operations and more than 50% expected to begin implementing XML applications in the next 12 months. As a "meta" language, currently 2-3 new XML vocabularies are being generated for specific industries each week, using the rules as specified in XML. These new vocabularies are impacting virtually every industry and many different areas of IT including the design of databases, interfaces, wireless applications, and even the integration of ERP systems. But what is XML and what are the real issues involved? This workshop will give participants a general understanding of what XML is and how it is used as a tool for information exchange especially in E-Commerce. Participants will understand the evolution of XML and some of the major new industry vocabularies. The presenters will draw upon their experiences in teaching XML and also developing applications for industry to try and demonstrate how this new technology will impact IS curricula in the near future.
