In this special section, the underlying dynamics contributing to the establishment of the Russian middle class are discussed. Among these are job growth as the economy grows and stabilizes as well as an increase in consumption. The Russian middle class, however, has differnet household budget pressures than those of households in other industrialized nations. Thsi is primarily a function of the transition from a planned to a market economy.
