In this paper, we present a new method of ultrasonic Inspection for nondestructive characterization of metal matrix composite. From the results of ultrasonic tests of Al/SiCp composite, the following important raws of ultrasonic waves were revealed. (1) Propagation time decreases with an increase in SiCp volume fraction; and (2) pulse width increases with an increase in SiCp size. We studied these phenomena based on a probabilistic method, and derived formulas for the relationship between ultrasonic waves (propagation time and pulse width) and dispersed aprticles (volume fraction and mean size).
