Time Delay Estimator for Surface Profiling

In this paper two estimators - the MSX and MXS - for the estimation fo subsample time delays in narrowband signals are presented. In these estimators cross-correlations and auto-correlations are matched at a number of different lags to yield a number of time delay estimates which are subsequently combiend to obtain one robust estimate. Using simulated data, their performances are compared to those of two cross-correlation based estimators. It is seen that all four estimators perform well at high SNR but at low SNR the MSX and MXS eistimators offer significant improvements.
