Soft reduction technology has been known to be the best way to minimize center segregation through the compensation of negative pressure by the reduction of shrinkage cavity. The crater end positions were lnve-stigated by pin shooting, surface temperature measurements and numerical analysis of heat transfer. Based on these results, soft reduction was applied to bloom caster at Pohang Works of POSCO. From a series of test for soft reduction, Center segregation of carbon was reduced from 1.4 to 1.1 and lndex of breakage frequency during drawing process was reduced from 70percent to 30percent level as well.
