The Use of Multi-Stage Aqueous Washers in the Manufacturing and Maintenance of Aerospace Parts

As of January 1996, the world's most industrialized nations banned the manufacturing of chemicals with significant ozone depleting potential (ODP). This measure is expected to completely eliminate their use and help restore the earth's ozone layer, known to shield humans and other life forms from harmful ultraviolet radiation. This ban prompted industry in general to reevaluate manufacturing and maintenance processes that relied on chlorinated (ODP) solvents. Parts cleaning had to be included in these studies, based on their substantial use of 1,1,1 trichloroethane (methyl chloroform, or MCF), one of the chemicals banned.
