Cathodic vacuum arc evaporation is widely used to deposit hard wear-resistant coatings on tools and machine parts. The paper demonstrates the potential to decrease the amount of lubricant used in forming sheet material, for cutting as well as for machined parts. The following coatings are recommended: CrN for metal forming, AlTiN for cutting and metal-carbon coatings (eg. mCr:CH) for machined parts.
