High-performance sputter coatings on plastic film for electronic display applications

In this age of computers and electronic information, the growth of the market for electronic displays has been phenomenal and is anticipated to greatly exand in the coming decade. With the exception of laminated polarizars and touch panels, polymer based, iptocal films have played a minor roll in electronic displays. However, this situation is changing rapidly as there are growing needs in cathode ray tubes (CRT's) and several types of flat panel displays (FPD's) for performance enhancements and new roducts that may best be served by vacuum web coatings on polymer s ubstrates. In this paper, we discuss some of the opportunities and performance requirements for s uch materials in electronic display applications.
