NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC), is participating in the Space Solar Power Exploratory Research and Technology program (SERT) for the development of a solar power satellite concept (Fig 1). The aim of the program is to provide electrical power to Earth by converting the Sun's energy and beaming it to the surface. This paper will give an overall view of the technologies being pursued at GRC including thin-film photovoltaics, solar dynamic power systems, space environmental effects, powwer management and distribution, and electric propulsion. The development path not systems for the future, but provides synergistic opportunities for contemporary space power architectures.
