Soviet designed reactors are frequently characterized as reactors with unacceptable high risk. Recent PSA studies performed for all reactors operating in Slovakia show that core damage frequency (CDF) for WWER440 reactors (both V230 and V213 design) is comparable with some Western plants; it is, however, significantly higher than CDF for mdoern plants in operation. These remarks will indicate the principle reasons for higher risk of V213 reactors in Bohunice NPP and possibilities for cost-effective reduction of the risk. The regulatory approach applicable for countries with high electricity demand and limited financial resources will also be explained.
