Surfactant enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR) has been shown to have the potential for enhancement of remediation of aquifers contaminated with nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) both through increasing of the solubility of contaminants and by increased physical displacement of the NAPL resulting from reduction of interfacial tensions (1). Althought he parameters that must be included for evaluation of specific surfactants for SEAR are knwon, no method of balancing the various parameters has been proposed. The results of completed field tests, and data from two tests now in progress provide an indication of the relative importance of the various parametes. In this paper, the results of the field tests are briefly reviewed, implications are drawn for selection of surfactants and prediction of performance, and a method of selection of surfactants is presented.
