Due to the higher specific tensile strength as compared to commonly used metals, magnesium alloys are receiving interest for their application of automobile casting components. However, this application has not been expanded to include the structuarl components at this time 1). There remain numerous probrems to be solved. One issue is that the relationship or influence of the microstructure on mechanical properties has not been accurately determined. Also a process to provide a sound casting is still not available.
