NASA/Ames Research Center's 7' x 10' wind tunnel required an inexpensive, general purpose data acquisition system to replace an aging one. LabVIEW was selected as a graphical programming language that allows rapid development of Graphical User Interfaces (GULs), and the functional code behind them. It provides a full complement of programming and user-defined data structures, as well as data acquisition, computation and presentation libraries. Due to its widespread use at Ames, the Macintosh was the selected hardware platform on which to develop the system. This paper addresses the data acquisition requirements, computational requirements, the unique design approach, and finally the lessons learned during the development of the LabVIEW Data Acquisition System (LDAS).
